Student Business: ‘ZooTown’ founded by Ibiere Banigo

image5It’s been 6 months since Ibiere Banigo won £5,000 in the Venture Competition 2016 to fund her startup, Zoo Town. Zoo Town is a platform that aims to help parents find flexible childcare for their children by connecting them with experienced babysitters and tutors in London.

Ibiere originally pitched her business idea under the name of ZooKidz so clearly her business has undergone some big changes! Where is she now? How has she spent the money? 💸 We picked Ibiere´s brain to see how she´s progressed with Zoo Town and what she´s learnt on her entrepreneurial journey.

1. How have you spent your Venture prize money?

The design of the website, branding & incorporating the business.

2. What have you learnt along the way?

Research, research, research, there are many ways you can cut costs and get things done for free. Lydiah always says ‘Think entrepreneurial’.

3. What advice would you give the next Venture winner on how to win the competition?

Having passion is great, but make sure you have a strong business idea too!

4. What has been the biggest obstacle in the last 6 months for your business and how did you overcome it?

Realising that I spent money on things I didn’t need to. Even though £5,000 is a lot of money, it is easy to spend it on things you don’t need to. I had to think about how I was going to spend the rest of the money differently. I also made use of the things I had (this included advice from professionals who were my friends). It saved me a lot.

5. What has been the most rewarding part of your experience?

Making mistakes and changing them into strengths. I believe every setback is preparing you for a comeback!

It’s a wonderful feeling when you turn an idea, into a business. It has been challenging, but everything I have learnt along the way has helped me to improve this platform. The most exciting part was creating the look and feel of Zoo Town. It’s funny how I used to love the logo and concept behind Deliveroo and Uber. Now, when people see my Logo and hear what I’m doing, they share the same feeling. It’s crazy.

This platform is going to do amazing things! I cannot wait to see it come to life and help so many students in different ways. If you haven’t already, sign up at www.zootownstudents.com and stay locked in!
